Presbyopia Surgical Procedure

Presbyopia is an eye disease commonly contracted by people whose ages are at 40 years and up. It is the failure of the eye to focus on objects at different distances. Presbyopia surgery through the use of scleral expansion bands is done by inserting 4 segments of plastic made from polymethyl methacrylate below the sclera. Once the bands are inserted, the distance between the lens and the muscle which focuses the lens is increased. This increase in distance between muscle and lens also equates to an increase in tension of the muscle. The effect is the improved ability of the lens to focus on objects.
